अँधेरा छटेगा, सूरज निकलेगा, कमल खिलेगा

— अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी

In the early 2000s, India had witnessed steady economic growth under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and BJP in general had become synonymous with progress due to reforms, infrastructure and corruption free governance. According to all the exit polls, BJP was all set to win General Elections 2004. Results, however came as a shocker because BJP had lost!! The frightening thought of 2004 repeating itself was at the back of the mind of every BJP supporter. However, by 10:00am of 23 May 2019, it was pretty clear that BJP led NDA was all set to form the next government.

Narendra Modi’s popularity remained undiminished from North to South and from East to West. That is because Narendra Modi is seen as incorruptible and someone who has the best interest of India on his mind. Narendra Modi remains to be the man who resonates the idea of a ‘New India’. The nation has bestowed its confidence in Narendra Modi with a stupendous victory.

The result signifies that Narendra Modi is the most powerful mass leader since independence and that the BJP has emerged as the new aggregator in the Indian polity. The dominance of caste and identity politics, which the Congress thrived on, has slowly diminished since 2014. Caste mobilization, which had become a natural way of winning elections, finds no takers in Modi’s vision of a ‘New India’. This has been proved by the Uttar Pradesh results. Where experts predicted BJP would win around 30-35 seats, it won more than 60 seats out of the total 80 seats, in spite of SP and BSP vote consolidation. This is because Modi ensured universal access to public goods without any thought to the identity of the beneficiaries. About 355 million bank accounts were opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, 92.7 million toilets were built under the Swachh Bharat Mission, 72 million gas cylinders distributed to women under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, 100 million individuals availed loans under the Mudra Yojana, millions of houses were built for poor, 500 million people were covered under the Ayushman Bharat, and millions more benefited from the pension and insurance schemes. All these policies were directly pushed by Modi. Apart from this, Modi paid special attention to our North-East India which has been historically neglected since independence.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

355 million new bank accounts were opened — becoming a game-changer for the poor and women who have been left out of the ambit of the banking system.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

92.7 million toilets were built under the Swachh Bharat Mission. National sanitation coverage increased to 90% by August 2018. 35 states and union territories, 699 districts, and 5.99 lakh villages are now Open Defecation Free. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), since the commencement of the Swachh Bharat Mission, at least 180,000 diarrhoeal deaths have been avoided in rural India.

The opposition however had its department of dirty tricks busy. The Congress ruled UPA, which was a laboratory for corruption and scams during their tenure, called Prime Minister Modi a ‘Chor’ with their infamous “Chowkidar Chor Hai” slogan. Narendra Modi who had presided over a clean government in Gujarat for over 12 years, and had presided over a clean government at the center for 5 years was labelled a ‘Chor’ by the president of party who was himself out on bail on corruption charges.

The Congress, who for decades had used caste and religion for their politics, who had become a symbol for corruption, failed to realize the intellect of ‘New India’. For ages, the Congress has ruled democratic India like an autocratic empire. They trampled upon the hopes and aspirations of the Indians. People aspired for a better life, people struggled to even earn bread with honest day’s work, but Congress politicians were busy building castles for themselves. The Congress for ages exploited our nature of forgiveness and empathy, to build empires for their own. For generations, people were given false promises. But the cadre that ensured Congress’ victory were given perks and power that kept them going and in return they helped Congress win election after election. Opposition’s weakness of not having a strong cadre was exploited by the Congress. The result, Congress ruled India like invaders would have ruled — by exploiting her own citizens for their personal enrichment. The kept giving empty slogans, when the real need was of fulfilling the nation’s aspirations. India was sick of these old hand-out promises of which very little reached the citizen.

But the Congress didn’t stop at that, even lutyens media had their own narratives to push. After all, they were an intrinsic part of an ecosystem built by the Congress. Perks they received from the ruling Congress were not for charity. They owed their masters and they did anything and everything to satisfy them. From the time Modi arrived on the national stage a few months before May 2014 elections, there has been a unique desire on the part of these lutyens and liberal elites to see everything wrong in Narendra Modi. India’s lutyens media, political pundits, analysts and psephologists tried to create false narratives against Narendra Modi and the BJP. They ran a blistering, biased and putrid onslaught against the Prime Minister. But all these narratives were trashed by the Indian voter. The BJP emerged stronger than ever. No incumbent government in India managed to increase its tally since 1962, even when there was hardly or no opposition to the Congress’ politics. But Narendra Modi did what many others couldn’t. Why did hundreds of millions of Indians give five more years to a man whose government as per these lutyens left the country worse than it was in 2014? While these critics have found little to celebrate about the government of the past five years, the people of the country have a different verdict.

Bankrupt leaders who tried to exploit our strengths — accommodation, forgiveness, welcoming attitudes, understanding and empathy — to mean our weaknesses have been shown the door.

The ability of the Modi government to fulfill the basic needs of electricity, gas connections, roads, bank accounts, healthcare, houses, national security and hygiene to a huge chunk of Indians who hitherto had been left out for more than 65 years formed the base of Modi’s vote-bank. Modi has given a new grammar to Indian politics. He has tapped into the aspirational instincts of Indian hinterland. While his detractors were busy mocking his policies and dismissing them as publicity, Modi was directly supervising the delivery of his promises. He gave a massive push to Digital India by promoting the trinity of Aadhaar, Jan Dhan accounts and mobile phones. By cutting out intermediaries and bureaucratic hassles, he was able to ensure that benefits of government subsidies and other schemes fully reached the people for the first time through direct benefit transfers. Modi topped up his welfare push with direct income support for small and marginal farmers. Apart from this, Modi paid special attention to regions where the BJP has been historically weaker, regions such as Bengal, North-East, Odisha, Kerala etc. These were the regions where Modi’s political opponents dominated and where BJP had no hopes of any electoral benefits. These were also the regions which were historically neglected by the ruling parties as well. But instead of neglecting these regions that didn’t vote for him, he paid special attention to their progress. North-East is the best example of this approach. The amount of effort the central government put to complete the pending projects in north-east is commendable. Today, after more than 70 years of independence, the north-east is has finally reached the center.

The election campaign saw the Congress using many dirty tricks and making many tall promises. But the GE19 verdict has thrown out the age-old practice of the Congress. GE19 verdict has shown that resurgent India will not fall for empty promises. The Congress’ time to divide us on religion or caste is gone. The resurgence that Modi has achieved is massive. For some, Modi is everything evil and his supporters are bigots, illiterate, dangerous idiots, who had a chowkidar in front of their Twitter handles. Be it comparing Modi to Hitler, or be labeling Modi as a ‘Chor’, India has trashed all these opposition labels for good. And there is a reason behind that, India has benefitted enormously from the schemes launched and implemented by Narendra Modi. Faith, which was once restricted to Gods and religion now transcends its definition. Today, nation’s faith is in Modi, nation believes that Modi is the man who can deliver, who can improve the lives for each and every individual. These beliefs are not without foundation, as highlighted previously, people have benefitted enormously. Victory is not Narendra Modi’s; it is the victory of justice over the injustice that millions of Indians have been subjected to since independence. It is the victory of Indians for a New India. It is the victory of grace, dignity and a commitment to work towards a country we want to see flourish, thrive, grow and compete with the best in the world. We are, Vijayi Bharat.

“Bhakts” were called bigots, illiterate, dangerous idiots. “Bhakts” stand vindicated today. They were subjected to abuse, made fun of, berated, denigrated, belittled, and vilified for their support for Modi. BJP and RSS supporters were brutally murdered for their faith in ‘New India’. But it was the belief and trust in Modi that made people solidly stand behind the Prime Minister. People for long have voted for political figures, for political parties. This must be the first time that people voted for themselves, for their future, and for the future of their children. What Modi offered the nation was a springboard for national pride and development.

Now Modi has an even greater responsibility than earlier. The aspiration of living upto Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s dream of “India 2020“is in the minds of all Indians. With Narendra Modi’s track record and with Indians standing strongly behind him, we can and will achieve a ‘New India’. But our responsibility doesn’t end with us casting our vote. The strategy to divide us so that a handful of politicians can stay united in their cocoon of entitlement and inheritance needs to be trashed forever. We have to stand together and pull in the same direction on all issues ranging from but not limited to national security, economic development, foreign policy, public health and job creation. Over the next few years, we need to throw out the pessimism and bias that Narendra Modi’s opponents want us to fall for. Vijayi Bharat is just a start, Samrudha Bharat should be our next target.
