“The ultimate aim of ego is not to see something, but be something”
Uddhav Thackeray’s romance with his ego under the mask of wanting a Shiv Sena Chief Minister (CM) was quite evident after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Election results. One had hoped that the craving of wanting to satisfy his ego would end when not just any Shiv Sainik, but he himself became the CM of Maharashtra in the Shiv Sena led Maha Vikas Aghadi. But self-adulation prevailed.
Uddhav Thackeray recently ordered a complete halt of any and all work at the Aarey metro depot. This decision makes no sense at all. It is foolish, absurd, illogical, irrational and absolutely thoughtless. Firstly, the Devendra Fadnavis government had categorically stated before the Supreme Court of India (SC), that no further tree-cutting was needed to take forward the work at the Aarey metro depot. Secondly, the SC in spite of this submission, had ordered a stay on any further tree-cutting. Thirdly, at the same time the SC had categorically stated that the stay was restricted to the felling of trees and not on other work needed for the construction of the metro depot. Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena government has in spite of these facts ordered a stay on the Aarey metro depot.
When no further tree-cutting is required, when the SC has already ordered against any further tree-cutting and when the SC – the highest judicial authority of India, has allowed the metro shed project in Aarey, what sense does the Maha Vikas Aaghadi’s decision make?
While the Thackeray’s are known for their love for luxurious cars, they need to realize the plight of the common Mumbaikars who risk their lives daily by travelling in overcrowded locals.
While the Thackeray’s are known for their love for luxurious cars, they need to realize the plight of the common Mumbaikars who risk their lives daily by travelling in overcrowded locals.
Facts suggest that at least 10 commuters die daily because of overcrowded railways. That is around 3000 – 4000 deaths per year. Will the decision to stop the work at Aarey metro depot save the lives of these Mumbai commuters? No, it won’t! Then what does this stay order achieve besides nurturing the egos of Aaditya Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray?
The entire Mumbai Metro Line 3 (MML-3) project is under the ambit of the United Nations Framework for Climate Change (UNFCC). The Indian judiciary has taken the notice of all the facts. Opponents of the metro depot at Aarey have been proven wrong by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the High Court (HC) and the SC orders. All these branches of the Indian judicial system have heard each and every argument made by the opponents, and only then have they ruled in favor of the Aarey metro depot.
Mumbai metro will have a significant positive impact on commuting in Mumbai along with significant long term positive environmental impact. In a press conference, the newly chosen CM proclaimed that taxpayers’ money will not be wasted and then went on to announce stalling the construction of the metro depot. Any delay in the project will lead to a cost increase of around Rs 4.23 Cr per day, a waste of the taxpayers’ money. Even if the alternative Kanjurmarg site is chosen a smaller depot of 16 stabling lines would have had to be setup at Aarey which would also entail cutting of 1300 trees. Shifting of the metro depot from Aarey to Kanjurmarg would also be waste of taxpayers’ money as the line then will have to be extended for another 10 Kms. Besides, Kanjurmarg land is under litigation. If the land at Kanjurmarg is proved to be privately owned then the additional burden of acquiring this land to the tune of Rs 5200 crores would also be a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Maharashtra has only moved backward under Uddhav Thackeray's Maha Vikas Aghadi. For the state of Maharashtra to get its growth story back the MVA government must go. Shiv Sena must go. Nationalist Congress Party must go. Congress must go.
